This year World Sight Day is on Thursday 14 October 2021 and the theme for this day of awareness is #LoveYourEyes so what better excuse for us, as mobile opticians, to shout about how you can love your eyes and make sure you keep your eyes healthy. We are here to ‘deliver the gift of optimum vision so you can see, live and enjoy life’ so let’s get started.

The 4 P’s to loving your eyes

The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) have come up with the 4P’s guide to loving your eyes.

  • Prevention – To help keep your eyes healthy and prevent eye conditions occurring there are a number of simple changes you can make to your lifestyle. Eating a healthy diet (with leafy greens and vitamins and minerals etc), taking part in regular exercise and cutting down on alcohol and smoking are some positive steps you can make to love your eyes.
  • Protect – Love your eyes by protecting them from harm and reducing the risk of eye injury. Make sure you use these preventative measures to keep your eyes safe: limit your screen times (on smartphones, tablets, laptops and computers) to avoid eye strain, wear protective eye wear when you are in a hazardous situation such as carrying out DIY, working with chemicals, working with bright lights etc, and finally protect your eyes from UV rays from the sun by wearing sunglasses.
  • Preserve – It is important to use eye care services and have a regular eye exam to ensure that you preserve your healthy vision and eye health. Regular sight tests makes sure that you keep a comfortable vision and can highlight any changes in your eyes (such as blurred vision) or eye-related health conditions can be treated early to protect your eyes. We can make referrals to hospital optometrists if needed.
  • Prioritise – Please make sure your eye health is one of your main priorities and make ‘Love your eyes’ your mantra and spread the word to all of your friends and family so that everyone can enjoy the gift of sight and avoid visual impairment because they care about their eyes and have frequent eye exams to ensure they remain healthy.

Make your pledge

The IAPB want to raise public awareness and have asked individuals and organisations to pledge to love their eyes and have a regular eye test. Their aim is to get a million people to have their eyes tested. Opticall will be helping them with this cause. In September 2021 our eye care professional’s carried out 408 eye tests in our local community, in care homes and the comfort of their own homes, which we have pledged to this worthwhile campaign.

Why don’t you pledge to have an eye test too? Book an appointment with us for a thorough NHS home-visiting optician’s service where we can conduct a comprehensive eye exam and eye health check. Should you need frames/lenses then we will show you our wide variety of glasses for you to pick from – whether they be glasses for distance vision, near vision or bifocals.

Call us on 020 8998 4228 or email [email protected] to organise a complete eye exam in the comfort of your own home/care home. Find out if you are eligible to not pay the eye exam cost  and health costs towards your glasses (should you need them) by checking out our eligibility webpage here
